Meet Celtic Moonlight’s foal, by Gainesway’s Tapizar!

Celtic Moonlight, a 6-year-old mare by City Place out of the Pentelicus mare, A Penny At a Time, recently gave birth to this beautiful filly by Gainesway’s near-millionaire Tapizar – son of three-time leading sire Tapit and second-leading third-crop sire of 2018 with progeny earnings of $6,441,123. Tapizar won four stakes, three graded, including the 2012 Gr. I Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. He’s the sire of Monomoy Girl, the 2018 sensation who romped in the Eclipse Award voting as best 3-year-old filly, garnering 247 of 249 votes. She won five Gr. I stakes – the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff, $1 million Kentucky Oaks, $700,000 Acorn, $500,000 Ashland and $300,000 Coaching Club American Oaks – earning $2,954,750. Through July 18, Tapizar has progeny earnings nearing $3 million for 2019.

In her second career start as a 2-year-old, Celtic Moonlight raced a $55,000 maiden special at Gulfstream Park, Celtic Moonlight and won by eight lengths at odds of 9/10, clocked in 1:05.05 for the 5 1/2 furlongs over the main track. She also won on the turf at three, getting home by 2 1/2 lengths while racing 5 furlongs in :57.55 at Gulfstream Park West. She retired with earnings of $106,880, finishing in the top three in 13 of 23 starts.

Celtic Moonlight’s sire, the unraced City Place, is by the great stallion Storm Cat. He has sired 12 black-type winners, two millionaires, and earners of more than $14 million, including Jamaican 2-year-old filly champion City Flight. Millionaire La Tia is a 10-time winner, including eight stakes, five graded (Gr. I Matriarch). Stallwalkin’ Dude compiled an imposing record of 20-12-11 in 65 starts, was also an eight-time stakes-winner (Gr. III Bold Ruler at Belmont Park; Gr. III Vosburgh at Aqueduct), while earning $1,741,397.

A Penny At a Time has produced six other foals, and three have won thus far. Three-time winner Irish Wildcat broke his maiden at Tampa Bay Downs by 6 3/4 lengths racing seven furlongs, also won on the grass and earned $57,543. Irish Orchid raced just four times, winning twice (by 1 1/4 and 5 1/2 lengths) and finishing third once. The gelding Celtic City broke his maiden in his second start by 3 1/4 lengths and paid $67.40, added another victory by 4 3/4 lengths and was retired after just three races.
